Roslyn is the one town on our list where the terrain matters. The old village sits down in the valley by the pond, with Northern Boulevard carried over the top on the viaduct and the residential streets climbing hard on both sides. Cars here spend their lives going up and down grades, braking into tight corners, and parking on slopes, and that produces a particular set of problems for glass: stress cracks that open up on a cold morning, and door windows caught by a car door swinging downhill.
The commute out of here splits two ways. Some people walk or drive to the branch platform and ride in, and others drive to Mineola or take Northern Boulevard west. Either version leaves the car parked for nine or ten hours somewhere in the village, on a driveway cut into a hillside or in one of the municipal spaces near the shops. Given that we close at six and are shut all weekend, that daytime gap is the practical window for getting glass replaced without rearranging your life around it.
The village has a shape you can feel through the steering wheel. Old Northern Boulevard runs through the low ground past the pond and the clock tower with parking that is metered, angled and generally full, while the modern Northern Boulevard crosses high above on the viaduct and carries the through traffic to Manhasset and Greenvale. Roslyn Road climbs south out of the valley and runs down to East Williston and Mineola, which is the way most people reach us. The residential streets on the slopes are narrow, curved and often have cars parked one side only. That means we pick mobile locations here with care. A level driveway or a flat corner of a lot is far better for setting a windshield than a spot where the car is nose-down on a grade.

Hills and weather do most of the damage in Roslyn. Grit and salt collect at the bottom of the slopes over winter and get thrown up by the car ahead as everyone accelerates away from the flat, so chips here often land low on the windshield rather than in the middle. Parking at the shop is on the street outside, which is a relief after the village.
