Floral Park sits right on the Queens line, and that position defines the driving. Traffic pours through the village all day on Jericho Turnpike and Tulip Avenue, much of it people using the village as a shortcut between the city and central Nassau rather than stopping in it. The streets are compact, the commercial blocks are busy, and cars are parked close together in a way that has more in common with Queens than with the villages closer to us.
It is also a serious commuter town. The Main Line runs through here and the Hempstead Branch splits away at this point, which makes the station busy in both directions and puts a lot of cars in the surrounding lots and side streets by half past seven each morning. Those cars are then untouched for eleven or twelve hours. That is the window we work in, because a shop that closes at six on weekdays and stays closed at weekends is no use to somebody whose train gets back at quarter past seven.
Two commercial streets carry Floral Park. Jericho Turnpike runs along the northern side with heavy through traffic and a mix of shops and service businesses, while Tulip Avenue is the village's own main street, narrower and busier with local trade. Covert Avenue and Plainfield Avenue take the north-south traffic across the tracks, and the crossings there were rebuilt when the railway was rebuilt, so trains no longer stop the traffic dead. Belmont Park sits just over the line to the east in Elmont, and traffic heading there on an event day spills back into the surrounding village streets. Parking on the residential blocks is tight, cars are close to the kerb, and driveways are often single-width, so for mobile work here we do like a little warning about where exactly the car is standing.

Floral Park windshields take punishment from the turnpike. Jericho Turnpike carries commercial traffic all day at close quarters, and stop-start driving behind a truck is the most reliable way to collect a chip anywhere in this county. Being on the city border adds the second factor: a lot of local mileage happens on older concrete-and-patch road surfaces that throw up loose material, and the potholes that open every spring do their part by jarring glass that already has a flaw in it. Then there is the parked-car problem. On streets where cars sit inches apart, door windows get broken by opening doors, mirrors are clipped by passing vans, and the occasional overnight break-in takes out a quarter pane on a car nobody was watching.
Take Jericho Turnpike east through New Hyde Park and keep going until you reach Willis Avenue, then turn north for the last stretch into Williston Park and look for 708 on Willis. Around fifteen minutes when the turnpike is moving, closer to twenty-five in the afternoon crush. Hillside Avenue is the quieter alternative and lands you at the same corner from the west. Because that drive is nobody's idea of a good time, Floral Park is one of the areas where we do more mobile work than shop work.
