New Hyde Park is a busier, harder-working piece of Nassau than the villages immediately around us, and the glass damage tracks that. Jericho Turnpike and Hillside Avenue both run the full width of it carrying commercial traffic, Lakeville Road funnels everyone toward the hospital campus, and Marcus Avenue handles the office traffic. It is a place where a car covers real mileage on stone-strewn roads before it ever reaches a parkway, and that shows up as pitting across the lower third of a lot of windshields.
It is also solidly a commuter village. The Main Line stops here, and with the level crossings gone the trains move through faster than they used to, which has made the platform busier rather than quieter. Cars fill the lots and the surrounding side streets from before eight in the morning. Since we shut at six and stay shut at weekends, meeting those cars where they stand is usually the only version of this that works. You board the train with a cracked windshield and come back to a new one.
Getting around New Hyde Park means dealing with two east-west arteries and the railway between them. Jericho Turnpike carries the trucks and the strip retail, Hillside Avenue runs parallel with a mix of shops and houses, and New Hyde Park Road ties them together north to south past the station. Lakeville Road takes you up to the Long Island Jewish campus, where the parking structures stay full through every shift change. The village sits right against the Queens line, so a fair amount of the traffic here is people cutting between the city and the county rather than stopping. Side streets are narrow and lined with parked cars, so when we do mobile work here we prefer a driveway or a garage level over a curb space on a through street.

Truck routes are the story on this side of the county. Jericho Turnpike carries heavy commercial traffic all day, and heavy commercial traffic means loose aggregate, dropped hardware and grit picked up off construction sites. Follow a flatbed for two miles on that road in January and you will find a fresh pit somewhere on your glass. The rail work through the village added its own share of gravel to the streets around the crossings for a long stretch. Beyond the road surface, the hospital and office lots supply the parked-car damage: door glass broken by a smash-and-grab in a poorly lit corner, rear windows cracked when a hatch is slammed on a loaded trunk, and mirrors and quarter glass clipped in the tighter parking decks.
The straightforward route is Hillside Avenue heading east, past the New Hyde Park Road junction and on through to Williston Park, where you turn north onto Willis Avenue for the last few blocks to 708. Ten minutes covers it when the turnpike is behaving. Jericho Turnpike works equally well and drops you onto Willis a little further north. Either way, once you are on Willis Avenue the shop is a matter of watching for the number. Often yes, though garages need a little thought. We need enough clearance beside the car to lift a windshield into place, and low ceilings can limit how we work.
